Since we were home bound I took the opportunity to do a little spruce up in the little man's room.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><u style="color: #45818e;">BEFORE</u></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg2uq6WNX2e0vpfF2zdfeWjNMTSyi5SrdDhqHX2A-i5d1wGfEV7gmdelVeEBwpyw2M5Akihk7lLh8osBd0vq4cq2DFhMYpzGljOIBsHl6Wb5JR6A2u-MavbLJmkZ9-7h_V0vl9Fd3FoQzG/s1600/Nusery.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg2uq6WNX2e0vpfF2zdfeWjNMTSyi5SrdDhqHX2A-i5d1wGfEV7gmdelVeEBwpyw2M5Akihk7lLh8osBd0vq4cq2DFhMYpzGljOIBsHl6Wb5JR6A2u-MavbLJmkZ9-7h_V0vl9Fd3FoQzG/s320/Nusery.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
These letters were just the cardboard cheapies that you get from the craft store. When we hung them we used the plastic retail clips because any nails used to attach metal hangers would show through. Well, they started falling off the wall, which is a hazard since they were hanging over the crib. So they have actually had a home in the closet for months now. I don't remember who posted the tutorial on the yarn letters, but please let me know if you know who it was so I can give them credit. Anywho, I had letters, I happened to have yarn, and we were stuck inside!<br />
<br />

I still need to print some photos for little man's picture frames. He's starting to think he knows those people ;)!<br />

<br />
When I started out, I really didn't know where I was going with it {not a good plan}. I did however know what colors I wanted to incorporate. However, after the stool debacle I was a little hesitant to jump off of the neutral train. Forging ahead the mirror first got some more life with the same green paint that was used on my coffee table tray. That's a pop of color for you!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia_EyHH-HMl3Py5k62jtBjLailJTGapW2tWZ09aM6jIXlv6XAA5E_bvUwU1WrlLNRfIT3zXLxT4D2hLGARWnE64vtMEqk4unl8TcyV2jtLUJPE9nr886KVAT62K43xJ-dCXIQRS9Skgc5B/s1600/100_3062.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEia_EyHH-HMl3Py5k62jtBjLailJTGapW2tWZ09aM6jIXlv6XAA5E_bvUwU1WrlLNRfIT3zXLxT4D2hLGARWnE64vtMEqk4unl8TcyV2jtLUJPE9nr886KVAT62K43xJ-dCXIQRS9Skgc5B/s400/100_3062.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<br />
The room has a more rustic look so I watered down the grey used on the stencil walled entry and formed a glaze. This glaze was rubbed all over the mirror.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjARhrNhZh3ZaEJAgOI_IrKCYC0Cwx49riVhnqzzoxVc6yuikGJeQjW0A3LnVRK2r013yV6V2IHBonBG8qQcP4cC3G8jCwhgCcvsaqIBHUDlhPC4oMvkajWLKY-8Ky1Gswx1aw_J9eRRyf/s1600/100_3069.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjARhrNhZh3ZaEJAgOI_IrKCYC0Cwx49riVhnqzzoxVc6yuikGJeQjW0A3LnVRK2r013yV6V2IHBonBG8qQcP4cC3G8jCwhgCcvsaqIBHUDlhPC4oMvkajWLKY-8Ky1Gswx1aw_J9eRRyf/s400/100_3069.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Some stain is then applied to the detailing in order to give the piece some more depth. And there you have it!<br />
<br />

Sometimes it's just a free simple change that makes a room fresh! I am still thinking that I want to do something more with those plates, but I'm not sure yet.<br />
<br />

Apparently it is pretty common with Dell's around this age, so we have a checklist of things we need to do in order to get it up and operating properly. However, it was the weekend and I took the opportunity to use the hub's computer to upload my pictures for the week:)<br />
<br />
Remember way back when I wanted to find some thrift owls to makeover? Well, I didn't find any, but I found some cute plates that I knew I could do something with! Originally I thought they would go in the kitchen, but it was too crowded. So I decided to put them on this wall that I've been struggling with for awhile.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAnvfR1LAK3SDuyyLKKa_gkERiHvhB07ACGaW8wbLYcgfhnDtAfRRpWEYrx2aK_YNckB7dRNCDTxc8W_skTTUAi0XSeGgMSc9C-RX7UfQXuY7vAyDKJ7Aw7A7dTSyNc1rwOT9fBCd0_Yfv/s1600/100_3039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAnvfR1LAK3SDuyyLKKa_gkERiHvhB07ACGaW8wbLYcgfhnDtAfRRpWEYrx2aK_YNckB7dRNCDTxc8W_skTTUAi0XSeGgMSc9C-RX7UfQXuY7vAyDKJ7Aw7A7dTSyNc1rwOT9fBCd0_Yfv/s400/100_3039.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Here is a map of where I wanted to place everything. {I strongly urge you to do this if you don't want tons of holes in your walls}!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghwg3gSSLFUZRypgsksvw9Ph0y2-ux1_lQKnxLFesYsYs996E2z98Itis9P2Tt33H4E5yckKuNlBBVp8v2PBx1w-I6Pc4UXbP2pKnewbTWACDUIT6_puNTmWoPxTnyBVp1Ux4m3W1z53S1/s1600/100_3041.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghwg3gSSLFUZRypgsksvw9Ph0y2-ux1_lQKnxLFesYsYs996E2z98Itis9P2Tt33H4E5yckKuNlBBVp8v2PBx1w-I6Pc4UXbP2pKnewbTWACDUIT6_puNTmWoPxTnyBVp1Ux4m3W1z53S1/s400/100_3041.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This is how it looks with everything hung up. That mirror is contrasting too much, and the room is too brown and black. I think I am going to makeover that mirror to give the room more color. Maybe do something with those plates too!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBsgZE5LX0vDYVJ7Tb0IQ8pphGbjHjGOWA8NcA0KI_P8JXX0J6ekNZaaAFe4dvrgfoET2EcMfkyri3mU30ViQRusz3qenAvXmRKOqgzHalpcD5obLQS96OyJjQXwajFIWULLxlSyB56jPU/s1600/100_3046.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBsgZE5LX0vDYVJ7Tb0IQ8pphGbjHjGOWA8NcA0KI_P8JXX0J6ekNZaaAFe4dvrgfoET2EcMfkyri3mU30ViQRusz3qenAvXmRKOqgzHalpcD5obLQS96OyJjQXwajFIWULLxlSyB56jPU/s400/100_3046.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Eventually I would like to swag the light fixture to be centered on that short wall, and add a buffet. When I figure out how to plant a money tree I'll get all of my wish list completed ;)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD-Gpi-p4vN2jtly6sZC3xEMDnEyqmcAt3cVEGcYmsPQ-PAhhFM9TNto3-nQNnWb8jjfWuM2KHDJFIbAtJsU46k9j8qiKzEw61nTJ0UvZQl2YwJzakks3sQzQWLr0z6KDRZTy7DgeYBj4a/s1600/OB-Dining+Room+Mock-Up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="281" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD-Gpi-p4vN2jtly6sZC3xEMDnEyqmcAt3cVEGcYmsPQ-PAhhFM9TNto3-nQNnWb8jjfWuM2KHDJFIbAtJsU46k9j8qiKzEw61nTJ0UvZQl2YwJzakks3sQzQWLr0z6KDRZTy7DgeYBj4a/s400/OB-Dining+Room+Mock-Up.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Stay tuned for how I transform the mirror, and hopefully it won't be as much of a mess as the stool.<br />

Hopefully I'll be able to fix the issue and give you a sneak peak of my dining room remix later today. <br />
<br />
I was hoping to leave you with some eye candy at least, but now the computer won't even turn on! Please forgive me if I am MIA while trying to figure this out.<br />

Inspired by the colors and pattern of this Union Jack Rug the stool began a transformation...<br />

The whole scene tells a story about the person living in that space and is so thoughtfully designed. You may not remember that <a href="http://houseofficek.blogspot.com/2010/10/where-modern-family-lives.html">I featured Modern Family's set</a> awhile back when I first started blogging, however it is one of my most popular posts to date. I thought I would give you a glimpse into another stunning set that I can't take my eyes off of. It is the one from Alicia Florrick's Chicago Apartment in The Good Wife. I really love the whole decor, it is a great mix of modern and traditional styles, which speak to me!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; font-size: x-large;"> </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; font-size: x-large;">Kitchen</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://barbrabright.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/gw-range-wall.jpg" width="320" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ9j2U2UV878lKqHZinrov05nSvsjjJwp4PnPH3ZIURNCDD01bU5jw2Js9d5ivQqQANYrXSD4Tn0iReV4w_j6Dd0zzz4KeXQ23FG8J_ge3e7RX5GkgE3ZUxXCkKIsy1gHeXsCZktHD4Lg/s320/kitchen.jpg" width="320" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The kitchen is my favorite room in the set. I can't get enough of those cabinets and the shelves over the windows. The set designer actually had the cabinets built on site by the shows on set contractors. Look how well this kitchen is staged to make it look lived in. While there are some quirks, like dishwasher on the opposite wall from the sink and fridge bumped right up next to the counter, when the camera is closed in on the space it seems to flow nicely. I guess it is the cameras playing tricks on us!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Can't get enough of these gorgeous built-in bookshelves! This is my second favorite room. The eggplant wall color against all of the warm wood furniture makes this dining room very intimate and sophisticated.<br />
<br />
The show is a great show, but I think the amazing sets add to my love of The Good Wife. What do you think? For me I could move right in, put up some family photos and call it a day. <br />

I am soo ready for the weekend. We are planning on staying close to home and out of the Super Bowl traffic. It is fun to live where all of the hoopla is going on, but traffic is NOT my thing. If you are planning on staying home and looking for a fun weekend spruce up you have to check out this great DIY craft project by <a href="http://onthebanksofsquawcreek.blogspot.com/">On the Banks of Squaw Creek</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg3wY0mtI/AAAAAAAAB44/OMubEkr8-U4/s320/img_5571%5B3%5D.jpg" width="320" /></div><br />
How about this one?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg4keJ0PI/AAAAAAAAB5E/wMaGCXaato8/s320/img_5573%5B3%5D.jpg" width="213" /></div><br />
Which started out like this:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg4w8N1cI/AAAAAAAAB5M/qkEOEWNG6i8/s320/img_5478%5B3%5D.jpg" width="320" /></div><br />
<br />
Here are some guidelines for making your own…each box is different, and I’m not sure I’ve figured out the best way to do it, yet, so expect that it will take a little experimentation.<br />
<br />
<br />
1. Find a box. Cut the corners off of two of the flaps. It makes things a little easier later on. (I’m not sure which two would be best…I tried the short flaps and the long flaps and either seems to work.) <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg5bX4jmI/AAAAAAAAB5U/t1wov39IoPo/s320/img_5558%5B3%5D.jpg" width="320" /></div><br />
I used this handy dandy thingy (a zip and snip) that hubby bought me for Christmas. It cuts through cardboard like (insert simile here.) It’s also AWESOME on all that plastic packaging that toys, tools, and other Christmas presents come in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg57VHaxI/AAAAAAAAB5c/vZzGuFFZg-0/s320/img_5479%5B3%5D.jpg" width="320" /></div>(I also had to cut part of the flaps off on that box.)<br />
<br />
<br />
2. Measure. Measure all the way around your box and add a couple inches. Measure from the bottom of your box to the top of your flaps, and again, add at least 3 inches (you will want your fabric to wrap around the top and bottom.) <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg7QV9RsI/AAAAAAAAB5s/50UOFRl69E8/s1600/img_5557%5B4%5D.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg7QV9RsI/AAAAAAAAB5s/50UOFRl69E8/s320/img_5557%5B4%5D.jpg" width="213" /></a><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg6YMmPhI/AAAAAAAAB5k/l2DkBJLEYa4/s320/img_5556%5B3%5D.jpg" width="320" /></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
3. Cut your fabric. For the diaper boxes, I used two fabrics and sewed them together and pressed the seams. This made the whole project a lot more complicated because I was obsessed with making sure that the seam was level and the same on both boxes. It’s not. I may come back later and glue some ribbon at the seam to even it out a bit more. If you are a perfectionist like me, just use one fabric, or for Pete’s sake, don’t use a plaid fabric because it’s too darn easy to tell if you screwed up by looking at the top of the box.<br />
<br />
<br />
*Note: My boxes were almost 60 inches around (all 3 of them.) So, if you are buying fabric for this project, I would buy 2 yards so that you have enough length, or plan on sewing (or gluing or stitch witchering) two shorter strips together.<br />
<br />
<br />
4. Glue. Apparently I was too busy burning the flesh off my fingertips to take pictures of this part. I started on one of the sides that was least likely to be seen (the short ends on the diaper boxes, for example) and used hot glue to attach the fabric along the bottom of the box. Pull it tight as you go. After wrapping it all around, I folded under the edge and glued that down.<br />
<br />
<br />
5. Next is the tricky part. The fabric isn’t attached yet on the flaps. Fold the flaps down, and try to get your glue gun underneath them. If you value your fingertips, you may want to use a piece of cardboard or a plastic knife or something to shove the fabric under the flap. Keep working with it, alternately swearing, tucking fabric, and picking glue off your fingers, until you have glued all four flaps down. I’m sure there’s a better way to do this…I just don’t know what it is.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg78yupuI/AAAAAAAAB50/jk82jkgh9qw/s320/img_5562%5B4%5D.jpg" width="213" /></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_I3ttd4uzssY/TSjg8u6y2GI/AAAAAAAAB58/LC8axmZ5gtk/s320/img_5566%5B3%5D.jpg" width="213" /></div><br />
6. Enjoy your new boxes! The one under the end table holds games and puzzles. Adam loves it. Last week, I said, “Look, Adam! I made you a new box!” Later that night, at my Grandma’s house for her birthday, he was asking me for it there. Crazy kid, loves organization as much as I do.<br />

Do you have any cheap, pretty storage solutions? I’d love to hear about them because I’m always trying to hide stuff!<br />
<br />
<i>I found this project especially interesting because for one I have LOTS of diaper boxes, and two it is free {mostly}. If the weather holds out I am going to be working in the yard, but if it turns ugly I'll be inside making myself some of these guys!</i><br />

While I didn't have the ingredients to make those yummy looking <a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Cinnamon-Mocha-Cupcakes/Detail.aspx">chocolate mocha cupcakes</a> that <a href="http://creativeindexblog.blogspot.com/">Jessica at creative index</a> suggested, and I wasn't about to hit the roads in this ice storm, I did have everything to make these fabulous <a href="http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Best-Chocolate-Chip-Cookies/Detail.aspx"><span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace; font-size: large;">chocolate chip cookies</span></a> though. We set the posts for the fence that will be towards the front of the house and built all of the fence panels and gate. However, because the posts have to set in the concrete we weren't able to get the panels onto the posts this weekend. Hopefully they'll be able to just be placed up quickly next weekend and we can work on the fence at the back of the house :)<br />
<br />
While we wait for concrete to dry (and any other down time that I have) I was browsing <a href="http://www.houzz.com/">Houzz</a>. I got their app last month, and I am WAY more addicted than I was before! While browsing around I came across this family room that I haven't taken my eyes off this whole week. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="262" src="http://blog.birdhouseinteriors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Screen-shot-2010-11-29-at-11.52.51-AM.png" width="400" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="260" src="http://blog.birdhouseinteriors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Screen-shot-2010-11-29-at-11.53.08-AM.png" width="400" /></div><br />
Isn't it so warm and inviting?! I puffy heart LOVE those built-ins! After staring at this picture for hours I decided to see who designed this room <a href="http://www.elizabeth-gordon.com/">(Elizabeth Gordon)</a>, and found so many more gorgeous spaces from the same Hollywood Hills home. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="260" src="http://blog.birdhouseinteriors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Screen-shot-2010-11-29-at-11.54.10-AM.png" width="400" /><img border="0" height="255" src="http://blog.birdhouseinteriors.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Screen-shot-2010-11-29-at-11.53.26-AM.png" width="400" /></div><br />

Of course it is, as if he wasn't dreamy enough already! Apparently I have been living under a rock because it was featured in In Style Magazine, so maybe you would believe me ;).<br />

What this means for my weekend is that I can start back up my exterior house painting and work on preparing for our spring garden. You may <a href="http://houseofficek.blogspot.com/2010/11/painting-metal-windows.html">remember that I got the back of the house done</a> before Thanksgiving, and since then it has been at a stand still. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Our yard is divided into three sections. The front yard, the backyard and the side yard. This is because our garage is located and the back of the house, and technically breaks up our backyard space. The side yard has been neglected for the entire three years that we have been in the house. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP0WY-2FBbK625759kdL7tobLfntSuhA3rm6oVIWw0fRYD_8bDlrbZkJFCQY4_BRqk4fp0GoRAWR8LD9N8kx8k98Fzf1qYwWQJbMq8-9kiybmrULRJ08BZpTjS-HrZuXcGGI8jM-imRdlS/s1600/100_2901.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP0WY-2FBbK625759kdL7tobLfntSuhA3rm6oVIWw0fRYD_8bDlrbZkJFCQY4_BRqk4fp0GoRAWR8LD9N8kx8k98Fzf1qYwWQJbMq8-9kiybmrULRJ08BZpTjS-HrZuXcGGI8jM-imRdlS/s320/100_2901.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"> {this area will be the vegetable garden}</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS6YAbXdsMS4cwR6s47qLv1H_UeMf3807FxKkPvksTZoCCoUN5qrNZTrHosZYT-aggXa86GmFD-IhXeDRcfg7SguM4g5z1vYeqMAL5suKeDuDaEal7jlWpXFlHD6Uo7mjZgpsbXd3vP3lx/s1600/100_2900.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS6YAbXdsMS4cwR6s47qLv1H_UeMf3807FxKkPvksTZoCCoUN5qrNZTrHosZYT-aggXa86GmFD-IhXeDRcfg7SguM4g5z1vYeqMAL5suKeDuDaEal7jlWpXFlHD6Uo7mjZgpsbXd3vP3lx/s320/100_2900.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">{future outdoor living or dining}</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I told you it was neglected! Excluding that fire pit, we don't even have chairs to sit and enjoy it :) This weekend we will be starting the old but new to this side of the house fencing project. The goal is to divide this space into a vegetable garden at the back and an outdoor living space to the front which happens to be just outside our kitchen. Be prepared to hear about this project for a.very.long.time as we don't really know anything about gardening or landscaping, so if you have any tips or advice we'd love to hear them! </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

(you'll be singing that all day now ;)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I have never been one for decorating for Valentine's Day, in fact the day itself isn't that big of a deal to me. My mom however is a HUGE holiday decorator, and sends me some sort of small gift every year. Those <a href="http://houseofficek.blogspot.com/2011/01/channeling-dr-seuss-in-home-decor.html">LIVE LOVE LAUGH mini vases</a> were a Valentine's gift from her last year, and these beaded heart coasters came from her as well (still trying to decide what to do with those, stay tuned). When my sweet hubby brought me some hot pink roses this weekend I decided that they needed the company of some hot pink Valentines Decor. So stealing a page out of my <a href="http://houseofficek.blogspot.com/2010/11/christmas-card-art.html">Christmas Card Art</a> I took a cute Valentine's card that I had given to the Mr. a few years back and framed it. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

Some of you guessed it, and I really confused others of you, but I was fixing up a Goodwill tray. Last week I dropped off some stuff at Goodwill, and you know I couldn't pass up going inside and seeing what they had! Here is my $2 purchase...</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />

<br />
<br />
I really wanted to add some more color into this room, but mainly I needed a home for my coasters besides in a drawer now that they look so darn pretty! I think the tray really adds a pop of color and ties in well with the tin art we have on our mantel. <br />

For those of you wondering if we had a living room... we do! I'm sorry I have never posted pictures of this room before, but I couldn't figure out a good way of photographing it without showing you all of the padding around our hearth ;) Our fireplace is monstrous, and trying to photograph around it is no easy task. So in light of keeping it real I choose little mans noggin over pretty pictures.<br />

I can't believe it is Thursday already, and I am still working on the same project I started at the beginning of the week. A coffee maker and iron had to be taken to Goodwill, and you know I couldn't leave there without stopping in to see if there was anything I couldn't live without. Lone behold, I found something!! Each of these photos inspired the transformation of my secret <span style="font-size: xx-small;">{sounds more exciting that it really is}</span> project.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I'll be the first to admit that sometimes I just want to get a project started, and tell myself "I'll come back and touch that up later". That was the case with this U.G.L.Y. you ain't got no alibi ugly telephone jack that is disrupting my chalkboard wall. The initial thought was that we could put a phone there, however our home is a 60's ranch and has no electric to plug a modern phone into {we don't even have a land line}. Instead I decided for some unknown reason to "disguise" it... um, not so much!</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="286" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRgdtFNIJdtyY6f6PGuX8jVUfzICKZj6ajICodeRUXaALp_bojplgiClEjxTIXDaew2EtbfTmf09zKcjG4c5Hd72zZyKdOKOHvfDBwZREohvW0VsKMQH4p-QI9nUpdQjOFnLbIEqv1iDIg/s320/Chalkboard+Wall.jpg" width="320" /></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">I wish I had know how easy this would be to remove YEARS ago! Apparently telephone wires can be cut and shoved into the wall. </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5AGrmmhR46JnLD6b6N1KFRBsxRNy4qCLGGkTgt7Gut7DOoNZ7qrMr65j4LC2MXXwGifGLUcq1IpfqOxLGhgfShiw8k9e9v2ykqLuMkKmr9Jq8sTPtJ_uvnbiNrrNroZwpUyOvS0NryQ8z/s320/How+to+Remove+Telephone+Jack.jpg" width="320" /></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Yikes, this was honestly the scariest part for me, I have always been told never under any circumstance cut wire without turning off the electric. I left the plastic housing in the wall because honestly it looked like it had become one with the wall.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0zJg252yYnnU-Yk6CNDZtf4ErAitrpcNEqQXFoDg4_eefIvtH2z6EuT13UiJnWNsQS2NuakhlFy6IbbLEVRZ7YK2sUs2MumGqBfTfZFRLv92gDv5f0bIpSTz7HQcoEXH5RFZI1NaEa43P/s1600/How+to+Patch+Telephone+Outlet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0zJg252yYnnU-Yk6CNDZtf4ErAitrpcNEqQXFoDg4_eefIvtH2z6EuT13UiJnWNsQS2NuakhlFy6IbbLEVRZ7YK2sUs2MumGqBfTfZFRLv92gDv5f0bIpSTz7HQcoEXH5RFZI1NaEa43P/s320/How+to+Patch+Telephone+Outlet.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">Then a little patch work with the help of a mesh and metal wall repair kit and some spackle. The tricky part was sanding it to the same texture as the rest of the wall. A couple coats of chalkboard paint and your done. With the confidence I have gained doing this little project, I am thinking I can tackle taking out the outdated intercom system. I mean really in a ranch style home do you really need those monstrosities? </div><br />

Just in case you were wondering <a href="http://houseofficek.blogspot.com/2011/01/winter-decor.html">what I decided to do with that bowl of...</a> I honestly don't know what these are, but they make me happy. I didn't do much with them because, well I felt like being lazy. It has been so cold here of late, and it can get a little mundane staying inside all day, but these bring a smile to my face because they are so funny looking.<br />

Therefore I figured we better assist in helping and have the wonderful <a href="http://honeyandthemoondesign.blogspot.com/">Carly from the blog Honey and the Moon</a> guest posting. If you aren't familiar with her blog, she is doing a master bedroom makeover and is taking us step by step through that journey. It is a wonderful blog, and she is an amazing person. I hope you'll take a moment to read about a project she's just completed as well as stop by her blog. Enjoy!<br />

<br />
Hi y'all, I'm Carly! I blog over at <a href="http://www.honeyandthemoondesign.blogspot.com/">Honey and the Moon</a> and I am so happy to be here guest posting for the fabulous Kendra today.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTq_zItbgdEvEoszcfC74nZVfEfjG4FYX3GwG_bvfm-3jD_n5Doz9kl_f6Exct0pKFpn1HsxjA44GEauoL2bJEfZW2TVlV4VxGUu3EthiIBNCi0nVTmKqDm3-mYZDCYTGE91743hQchsRC/s1600/honeyandthemoonheader.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="132" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTq_zItbgdEvEoszcfC74nZVfEfjG4FYX3GwG_bvfm-3jD_n5Doz9kl_f6Exct0pKFpn1HsxjA44GEauoL2bJEfZW2TVlV4VxGUu3EthiIBNCi0nVTmKqDm3-mYZDCYTGE91743hQchsRC/s400/honeyandthemoonheader.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">I just recently met Kendra through some mutual blogs that we both read. We quickly found out that we're both Texas girls {me being native, her being a "transplant"} and that we actually live pretty close to each other. Kendra is as sweet as she seems on her blog and since we're both on non-existent house budgets, I love seeing how she keeps her projects affordable.</div></div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">I'm currently a full-time student, a wife, and a momma to two sweet puppies. My husband and I live about 30 minutes from Dallas and 30 minutes from Ft. Worth, it really is a great place to be. I love coffee, organizing, and doing things in the </span><strike style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">cheapest</strike><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> thriftiest way possible...w</span>hich brings me to the project that I'll be telling you about today. </div><div style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">You see those little knick-knacks on the side table? I wanted something similar, but I wasn't interesting in spending too much money on anything. </div><div style="text-align: center;">And totally ignored that whole rule about waiting enough time in-between coats...</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRBk6kFwmHLuPLah9ojIczZvYBgjV81LGKfcIjNLxpe8mIN1Xn2D4P-PJ6Rjy-ssDXC2z9cfvssF8rmr4J-fPccERhMUY0UkxmVOYNbyGOie8pthIOirG_BVs_5_WgpzQoDmybPw9poknZ/s1600/editcircle.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRBk6kFwmHLuPLah9ojIczZvYBgjV81LGKfcIjNLxpe8mIN1Xn2D4P-PJ6Rjy-ssDXC2z9cfvssF8rmr4J-fPccERhMUY0UkxmVOYNbyGOie8pthIOirG_BVs_5_WgpzQoDmybPw9poknZ/s400/editcircle.png" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">I guess I never learned that I should just follow directions the first time, so I had to do a little bit of light sanding to fix some of the imperfections. I just used a 180 fine grit sandpaper, being really careful not to take too much paint off.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">I gave the birds another coat of the metallic paint, and {maybe} waited the suggested amount of time before whipping this stuff out for a finishing coat. Kendra recommended it to me after using it on a project, and I really loved it. It gave everything a very finished look.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi39D_RwA7UGLzlEJVg5aDqz_vRvt4wtifPscpW-sxPJAHBTYZSaf9fE9Fvk_Oy3zwg1cwcHbcTBX85Vn-yIf2hJV151-gSuIcHGo_Hxx8vkznf7hV0GlilbkI0u1z-jCKDTuzR6eADlhaT/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi39D_RwA7UGLzlEJVg5aDqz_vRvt4wtifPscpW-sxPJAHBTYZSaf9fE9Fvk_Oy3zwg1cwcHbcTBX85Vn-yIf2hJV151-gSuIcHGo_Hxx8vkznf7hV0GlilbkI0u1z-jCKDTuzR6eADlhaT/s400/007.JPG" width="300" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"> Warning: this stuff smells STRONG. I'd definitely recommend doing it outside if possible</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">My last step was to find a place for my birds. I knew that one was going by my bedside, but wasn't all too sure if the other would go on my hubby's side or not. In his words..."he doesn't like a lot of 'junk' on his nightstand." So, I'm still trying to find a place for my other little guy.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">Project Cost Breakdown:</span></div><span style="font-size: small;">Krylon Metallic Silver spray paint - $3.75</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Krylon Clear Gloss spray paint - $3.75</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">180 grit sandpaper - $2.50 {I bought extra for a future project}</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Ceramic birds - free </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Total: $10.00</span></span></span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">Overall, I'm really happy with the way that they turned out. The spray paint didn't give quite the metallic look that I was hoping for, but I'd read that from several other bloggers as well. Maybe I'll change them someday {I've thought about trying to silver leaf them}, but for now I'm really satisfied. I'm always so amazed at what a huge change a can of spray paint can make. </span></span><br />
<br />

Since our little man learned to walk we have had to move everything from within his arms reach. This has left the bottom bookshelf empty! I've turned to Houzz for some <strike>distraction</strike> inspiration on where to begin.<br />

I went into my standard word processor on the PC and found a font that I liked. Then taped some stencil paper to the screen, traced and cut with an Exacto knife. Taped the stencil to the place mat and went to town with a stencil brush and some acrylic paint.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsvkOHg0KTtV921eg9hd349QYt4l26ZQCK-yc57zmpY8NDKQ8-P78y9brHd_4Nba9jp2Pr5RPCl4qdcmpufX70Z-eO2prG2dT6wmkgxBBX57VSoUYNnSso1HzLynslGGxZIUmze2CnlbI8/s200/100_2575.jpg" width="200" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"> <span style="font-size: xx-small;">I shrunk the picture as small as possible because I am so embarrassed</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div> and they have looked like that for quite awhile. The really humiliating part is that I still <strike>insist</strike> let my guests use them. We actually use them a lot because we live in a very humid climate and our glasses sweat. The reason they still look like this is because I haven't found any new coasters that are in my budget and cute. What is a girl to do? Mod Podge! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7pe7jeS7K90DF9ZIno1bf8zDztCpFmz4Tt-gosd95vpRPM1mzEIzdLvss8up06i80ML8Qiwef9Gdr7bmlxKyluGwpJoIcsc3BK9EeevLYlNXa7HGOWlB3GLm3sRaFcLtFN9AUqAvw-VRi/s640/diy+retro+print+coasters.jpg" width="640" /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="color: #45818e;">Step 1:</span></b></span> sand, sand, sand!<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: small;"><b> <span style="font-size: large;">Step 2:</span></b> </span> prime<b><span style="color: #45818e;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Step 3:</span></span></b> paint, I avoided the center since I knew that I was going to be covering it up.<b><span style="color: #45818e;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Step 4:</span></span></b> I found a spool of ribbon that was the same size as the inset of the coaster and traced it onto the back of my scrapbook paper and cut it out<b><span style="color: #45818e;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Step 5:</span></span></b> Mod Podge it baby! First apply a generous amount to the back taking extra care to get the edges, and secure it down to the coaster. Wait about 20+ minutes for it to dry before applying Mod Podge to the top. I added two coats of Mod Podge to the top waiting at least 20 minuets in between. I am an impatient person when it comes to these types of projects, but you really need to wait the appropriate time on this step or you'll get bubbles under the paper. <span style="font-size: large;"><b><span style="color: #45818e;">Step 6:</span></b></span> Add a coat of clear gloss glaze. You have to wait 24 hours before doing the other side, this was the hardest part for me!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">This was such an easy and inexpensive update. I really wish I would have done this oh, five years ago!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

I took down all of the Christmas decor and generally de-cluttered, but I think I am in a little post Christmas funk. After everything has been put away I feel like my home is empty, and I haven't found any type of motivation to get crackin' on remedying that. That was until <a href="http://thoughtfuldesigns.blogspot.com/">Courtney over at A Thoughtful Place</a> re-posted about a little DIY project she had done about two months ago. I read her blog daily and don't know how I missed that post as I have been eying that cable knit bowl and vase she has for months! I won't re-post the tutorial as I followed her exact <a href="http://thoughtfuldesigns.blogspot.com/2010/11/i-heart-cable-knit-upcycled-sweater.html">cable knit vase tutorial here</a>. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

So now that I had some fun new pieces to work with I decided that I would start in my entryway. As those of you who have been following for awhile know it got a little <a href="http://houseofficek.blogspot.com/2010/10/stenciled-entry-revealed.html">spruce up with a stencil wall</a>, but I still hadn't figured out what I wanted to display in the cabinets cubbyholes. I fell in love with the Arthur Court dog treat bowl while remodeling one of my clients kitchens a few years back. <br />
<br />

I moved it into one of the cubbyholes, and added <strike>toy</strike> baskets to the bottom shelves where little sticky hands like to grab. Below are what look to be like the same photo, but look closely they're different. We had tried installing undercabinet lights in this cabinet years ago when we lived in our first apartment. We about blew up the place trying to attach the plug to the wires and gave up. While at The Dollar Store I picked up a few battery operated lights, and while they give off a slightly blue tint I didn't blow the house up! </span></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

I am going to be featured at two of my favorite blogs. My little spunky redhead and his kitchen are a hit folks {again I'm a little biased}. <br />
<br />
Carly at <a href="http://honeyandthemoondesign.blogspot.com/">Honey and the Moon</a> is featuring this tutorial in her Turn-Around-Tuesdays series. It has been a great pleasure getting to know Carly over the last few weeks, and it is a huge honor to be featured on such a great blog. Not only does she inspire me, but she is as sweet as she looks.<br />
<br />

<br />
<a href="http://alittlelovelyblog.blogspot.com/">A Little Lovely</a> is featuring us as well in Tuesday Tutorials! BIG DAY :) This is one of the very first blogs that I ever read, and I am constantly finding new inspiration for projects here. She is one talented lady! You really need to devote a day to snooping around in this blog as there are so many great ideas.<br />

I came across this wine box that my aunt and uncle gave to us a couple of years ago and it sent me back down memory lane. I still am wracking my brain thinking of practical ways that I can use this gorgeous box. Aren't those etched glasses just beautiful, not to mention that cobalt blue bottle? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQx4SJg-8oyqu5IQD3K_03ZqwohtqM7zyN0stMLuWAs0-LiV127icUep1chynvOeD_TgJAbBmu0zsyN3QVnBSHIhACi4wKrpTkD8SNJg1m7BCAJStGiLM_w5jbQIH8b9AWBMtz5kajeJ3I/s1600/The+Winery+at+Holy+Cross+Abbey+Beautiful+Etched+Wine+Glasses.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQx4SJg-8oyqu5IQD3K_03ZqwohtqM7zyN0stMLuWAs0-LiV127icUep1chynvOeD_TgJAbBmu0zsyN3QVnBSHIhACi4wKrpTkD8SNJg1m7BCAJStGiLM_w5jbQIH8b9AWBMtz5kajeJ3I/s640/The+Winery+at+Holy+Cross+Abbey+Beautiful+Etched+Wine+Glasses.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This is the first Christmas that we didn't go "home" for Christmas, and while we had a blast staying here I am now feeling a little home sick {on a side note, when do you stop calling your childhood home "home"?}. The wine is from The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey which is a winery at an old nunnery in the hometown of my aunt and uncle. There is a small vineyard on the property as well as a winery. Every year after Christmas the hubby and I would go visit them, pick up a bottle of wine and a couple more wine glasses, and drink the wine a few days later on our anniversary. <br />
<br />
Since I am going down memory lane, I thought you might like a break as well and look at some beautiful photographs taken there a couple of years back during a snow storm. <br />

I am planning on spending New Years Day the exact same way I spent today... doing nothing. The hubby has this entire week off, and you know what that means for mama I HAVE THE ENTIRE WEEK OFF! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Over the past two weeks I have been diligently working to make this tv cabinet that I purchased at a furniture resale store into the {this is my bias coming out folks} cutest play kitchen of all time! We had been planning on purchasing a play kitchen all finished, but my discriminating taste kicked in. The plastic kitchens are fine, but lets be honest they aren't the prettiest things ever. This is going to be in our kitchen for a few years, and I want it to look good. So on to the wood kitchens. Ugh, most are pink and for girls. REALLY?! I'm sorry, but boys like to get into cabinets and bang the pots and pans around too!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBhyS3H73rlpZCid9QN8dTf2wTpE8jW4irO5TCzoOEwJVOCo75fmzXV8BmmpH7aeIzVV52yX1iU_s-ZSC8jZzLPcq6ixwdFlRWvLhLys8o96Axd1Nm9tQwUlAkohn3AHra59hmyElXEoe3/s1600/play+kitchen+inspiration.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBhyS3H73rlpZCid9QN8dTf2wTpE8jW4irO5TCzoOEwJVOCo75fmzXV8BmmpH7aeIzVV52yX1iU_s-ZSC8jZzLPcq6ixwdFlRWvLhLys8o96Axd1Nm9tQwUlAkohn3AHra59hmyElXEoe3/s640/play+kitchen+inspiration.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
After being inspired by the wood kitchens my exact statement to hubby was "oh, I could make one of those. It would be cuter too!". So off to Goodwill, Salvation Army, Antique Square, and finally a furniture resale store with that little guy for $15. Done and Done! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeb0rkXdXajuY47mav55htcRvXt4uQCmCSpbz136aYo4OaetA0RqenZtBgWxlLvhBbM8NtjEjTKh5CYW4p83sff3s9jBq-rJ8iXhKVRNgW6EAmiAqPGeVX66K0CGYVh3TRhqK3rO0263Ze/s1600/diy+best+children%2527s+play+kitchen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeb0rkXdXajuY47mav55htcRvXt4uQCmCSpbz136aYo4OaetA0RqenZtBgWxlLvhBbM8NtjEjTKh5CYW4p83sff3s9jBq-rJ8iXhKVRNgW6EAmiAqPGeVX66K0CGYVh3TRhqK3rO0263Ze/s640/diy+best+children%2527s+play+kitchen.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 1:</span> This piece of furniture was a laminate tv cabinet. I knew in order to make it last with a destructive little guy I was going to have to do some good prep work. Before painting, the cabinet was transported over to a good friends home where <strike>I conned</strike> the hole for the sink was cut out. The cabinet was sanded all over, primed, sanded, painted, sanded, painted two more times and two good coats of polyurethane were added {do NOT skip this step, it really makes everything so much more durable for persons who aren't careful i.e. children}. I already had all of the paint in the garage, which determined the color scheme.<br />
<br />
<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 2:</span> Anything that was going to have a silver base coat got spray painted {sorry for the pictures, most were done at night in the garage}.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhYG1-3zXaY7SNR2kq-rebcFkkcjBVfN5JZ5wke0g2rFkLp2pZcbt4pApE5Ar8y2iRiHNCOMmrn6StAtWBIn0YA7SVEzPdiXmyg5wdjWezKUOkUWEtWeTUm24nT-rb3r0MgnaYK46DPdQv/s1600/diy+framed+chalkboard+wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="268" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhYG1-3zXaY7SNR2kq-rebcFkkcjBVfN5JZ5wke0g2rFkLp2pZcbt4pApE5Ar8y2iRiHNCOMmrn6StAtWBIn0YA7SVEzPdiXmyg5wdjWezKUOkUWEtWeTUm24nT-rb3r0MgnaYK46DPdQv/s640/diy+framed+chalkboard+wall.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 3:</span> Two coats of chalkboard paint were directly applied to the laminate side. Using a tip from the brilliant Janell over at <a href="http://isabellaandmaxrooms.blogspot.com/">Isabella & Max Rooms,</a> chalk was applied to the entire side after it had dried and then erased. It really does help not getting a lasting image of previous drawings on it. </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 4:</span> Using some scrap wood we had in the garage a frame was made to go around the chalkboard wall. I put it together and painted it prior to attaching it to the cabinet so that I wouldn't have to trim it out at all. Then I just touched up the areas where the nails were covered. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTQ4-WwT0TGnK6tqni3paELFxXXlqpOvOPUb5o-GcwKIqIBzT0uS1IuUTw_2ygOFrBf5kVhnfXFhIIymKxQBQ7syXswwMoP2V2kJDhmsTxCxB80ltq7ryrhDs6kkWuKIZl4IFowvHY1DXj/s1600/diy+best+kids+play+kitchen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="494" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTQ4-WwT0TGnK6tqni3paELFxXXlqpOvOPUb5o-GcwKIqIBzT0uS1IuUTw_2ygOFrBf5kVhnfXFhIIymKxQBQ7syXswwMoP2V2kJDhmsTxCxB80ltq7ryrhDs6kkWuKIZl4IFowvHY1DXj/s640/diy+best+kids+play+kitchen.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #45818e;"></span><span style="color: #666666; font-size: small;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 5:</span> After searching for a faucet to use, I decided to not invest the $30+ price tag of an actual faucet and become inventive. I found this little "J-trap" in the plumbing isle. It came with that base/washer. After spraying it with a good coat of silver paint, a metal washer was dropped into the base and screwed into the cabinet. The actual "J-trap" was then screwed onto the base. Not only does this allow for durability, but the "faucet head" is able to turn like a real faucet would.</span></div><div class="" style="clear: both; color: #666666; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 6:</span> Actually this came after the base coats of paint, but prior to the polyurethane. Black paint was applied to create the "stove top". </span></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #666666; font-size: small;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 7:</span> Holes were drilled for the knobs being used as faucet handles as well as stove knobs. </span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="546" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZDUqsqhRAZzTLL52JYJJ-YIIIkLkjDlHxq4TU1hiIzXf27sFQWRdBN2DVFT8O9OHmslszUV-O0_JMiEgXoIwOSkxlIaCu91mLGbxaH8kgFqQA5yRKZKiSMVBpkwtv2bGoc0uC25KxAlhG/s640/best+children%2527s+play+kitchen+curtain.jpg" width="640" /></div><br />
<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 8: </span> I found some scrap fabric at Hobby Lobby that coordinated with the colors of paint I was using {I didn't purchase any new paint, but used what I already had in the garage}. Using stitch witchery I made a no sew curtain to the opening size.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #45818e;">Step 9:</span></span> The only type of curtain rod that I could find to fit this opening was a tension rod. I know my son, and this would become a fun game to tear that curtain off. Instead I cut down a dowel rod to slightly smaller than the opening. I drilled small holes into the center of each end on the dowel rod. Holes were then drilled through the cabinet so that a screw could attach the dowel rod to the side of the cabinet {fabric was already on rod before being hung}.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-lzr4oRkA4ZpCoh_vJ88V6CdHVm9mTv3tH1PPdbB8jcaITSDhi-bp71qomR02za1IU4jwG8OK-uo96Dko8jhA7yKnyhhU3rH3oGyo2FHBEiVE-XIzeONFwbfcNPCAnHNYgKa6jU2AzL7Y/s1600/best+children%2527s+play+kitchen+retro+fridge.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="294" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-lzr4oRkA4ZpCoh_vJ88V6CdHVm9mTv3tH1PPdbB8jcaITSDhi-bp71qomR02za1IU4jwG8OK-uo96Dko8jhA7yKnyhhU3rH3oGyo2FHBEiVE-XIzeONFwbfcNPCAnHNYgKa6jU2AzL7Y/s640/best+children%2527s+play+kitchen+retro+fridge.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiKJxRu7Xjaat9lZY_z9JuIKebxzPD7fSIXjRjBM6Vln01W_C02FnjB12j8jUbyju-CQVgljEFKSuyp82nA1Qctky3L4DsGavQbQvvOE8fILT8ykQlqDw1UiPd-UUKoUC7JA0FZuTDGU8F/s1600/best+children%2527s+play+kitchen+oven.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="314" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiiKJxRu7Xjaat9lZY_z9JuIKebxzPD7fSIXjRjBM6Vln01W_C02FnjB12j8jUbyju-CQVgljEFKSuyp82nA1Qctky3L4DsGavQbQvvOE8fILT8ykQlqDw1UiPd-UUKoUC7JA0FZuTDGU8F/s640/best+children%2527s+play+kitchen+oven.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #45818e;">Step 10:</span></span> I drew an outline on the cabinet doors of what I wanted it to look like {this came in handy, because I didn't like how the oven and microwave were and repainted them}. Then the appropriate paint colors were added. Finally, a few stickers were attached for the fridge "big chill" logo and the microwaves buttons.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoDJd34IDtULusj0p-gVykRt9iH_RGMDIhH0F2c2-ZuEwhvP7U7tVsdLUuIweji0MGir11dkVkvw0WmqCxgWsoXhJCmy_LQzvYp9I7Gn28ffn_bAxG1VW7r2Jy78UVdSm4fsXvsAjWl5Pa/s1600/best+kids+play+kitchen+pretty+it+up.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoDJd34IDtULusj0p-gVykRt9iH_RGMDIhH0F2c2-ZuEwhvP7U7tVsdLUuIweji0MGir11dkVkvw0WmqCxgWsoXhJCmy_LQzvYp9I7Gn28ffn_bAxG1VW7r2Jy78UVdSm4fsXvsAjWl5Pa/s640/best+kids+play+kitchen+pretty+it+up.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Step 11:</span> Pretty it up - All of the accessories that made his kitchen extra unique were added including {to hubby's dismay} all 95 pieces of food. I really liked that "F" hood, but if I had it to do again I would get a shorter hook.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #45818e; font-size: large;">Adding up the Cost:</span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">cabinet - $15</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">supplies - $9.65</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">knobs - $12.36</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">replacement of broken knob - $3.99</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">fabric - $3.67</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">storage - $7.99</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: black;">accessories - $22.98</span></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
